It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.

Reputation

You must have heard elderly and wise people often say that your reputation is in your hands. It is because it takes ages to build a strong reputation with the loved ones and in the community. Whether it is a large scale corporation or a local trader, every person or entity place huge impetus on their reputation because once the reputation is lost, it is almost impossible to revive it back. Reputation is what makes the person or entity credible. Once you understand the value of reputation, your approach in life, whether it is business or personal life changes completely. You do not put your reputation at stake for anything because you can recover from the loss of money, but it hard or, in many cases, impossible to recover from lost reputation and credibility in the market.

You can’t buy a reputation; you’ve to earn it. It is only possible by proving yourself through time. It comes from consistency, quality, and ability to be sensitive towards others’ needs. It is especially true in the foray of business where the trust of the customers’ is only won by providing quality products and services, each time without fail. When you are good at what you do and don’t give your customers a reason to complain over the years, it helps you build a reputation in the market while gaining customers’ trust. It is this reputation that becomes the brand identity that helps you sustain through tough times and competition because credibility and a good reputation bring repeat business.

Similarly, in personal life, people who know you have built an image of you in their heads. We all label others in our head, knowingly or unknowingly. In times of crisis, we know who to make the first call depending on the circumstances and the need of an hour. The trust you’ve gained of people and the joy you bring in their life by your sheer existence is your reputation. People share their secrets with you or give you their priced car keys without questioning because they trust you. If they don’t, there are some corrections that you need to make. A bad reputation is not irreparable; it just takes time and the ability to walk on the bitter path to better yourself. If you’re ready to bring a positive change in your life to earn the trust of others and make corrections in yourself, anything is possible.

Think before you speak

Anger is a natural emotion that we all feel and have felt in our lifetime. When you are angry, the first thing you need to do is stay silent and not react immediately. It would help you think over it with clarity rather than take any action or say anything impulsively that you may regret later on. Many relationships and lives have been destroyed due to misplaced and misguided anger. Make it a habit to think before you speak. It helps in ensuring you come across as logical even during a tense situation, and not someone people would think twice before placing their trust.

Be kind and grateful

Treat others like you would want them to treat you. It is the basic principle of life that you need to follow. When you are kind and grateful, others will reciprocate similarly. You have to leave a legacy behind, and unless you’re kind and grateful in life, no matter how successful you’re, there won’t be many people missing you. In the end, it all comes down to how much you’ve given back and not how much you’ve gathered. Live a life that you’re proud of and let go of things that are beyond your control. Do not play with your reputation because it is the only true thing that dies with you and leaves a mark behind. Money cannot buy reputation and love. So, place people and love over money and success, and see the difference it brings in your life.
