The Story Of Jonathan Pinkard – How Generosity And Love Saved The Life Of A Homeless Person

generosity and love

Sometimes, it doesn’t seem like there are bad people on Earth. It’s just people who have not received the right kind of love from their parents or environment and the people who got that love. Generosity and love can change a man – can even save a life. And Jonathan Pinkard was such a man who received generosity and love that saved him.

Jonathan Pinkard was a homeless man. His mother was in rehab and he has been in the streets since then. On top of being homeless, Pinkard is suffering from autism too. His guardian and grandmother passed away and any living arrangement with his relative ended making him homeless. However, he was living in the men’s shelter with a job as a clerk – a minimum sustenance job.

One day, when he was working, he suddenly felt dizzy and his breathing mechanism was not working properly. The shortness of breath made him unconscious. In 2018 August, he found out that he needed a new heart. The news made him tremble. How could he get the money or investment to get a new heart? It was also clear that if Pinkard did get a new heart, his rough lifestyle as a homeless person would not be conducive to preserve his new heart. So, he was not considered as the best candidate to get a new heart.

Enter Lori Wood –  a 57-year-old nurse who found something in Pinkard that moved her from the inside. She is generally quite professional. But when she met Pinkard at Piedmont Newnan Hospital and saw that no tests were being conducted because of his background – she wanted to help somehow. She knew that Pinkard needed support, a friend – a guardian.

The fateful meeting between Wood and Pinkard happened 4 months after Pinkard learned about his need for a heart transplant and went in for a check-up. Wood took him to the car and brought him to her house where she lived with her three grown-up sons. At the farmhouse, a bedroom was set up and Pinkard was treated like another member of the family – another son. Pinkard recalls that from that January, Lori Wood was his Mama.

With the support of Lori Wood, Pinkard had surgery of his heart and has got a new heart. The operation was a success. Pinkard is not ungrateful. He knows that it was Wood who has given him a new heart as well as a new life. Pinkard is utterly grateful. He waits for Lori and after she returns home from work, he makes it a point to ask about her well-being and hug her. Wood too has grown appreciative of her nursing job, now that she knows that someone is waiting for her back home. They even like the same show called Family Feud – one of the ways in which Pinkard connected with her Mom.

The only point of an argument between them is that Pinkard is an Alabama fan while Lori is a Georgia fan. But that’s okay. Wood loves Pinkard and takes him to doctor’s appointments and also gives him the 34 pills that he needs every day. She does not allow him to have pizzas or sodium-rich food content. She is a true figure of generosity and love.

Piedmont Healthcare recognizes Wood for her work and her generosity and love and has given her the honor of ‘going above and beyond’ for the homeless Pinkard. She has set a new benchmark for caregivers everywhere.

The President’s Award is the culminating event of Piedmont’s Promise 360 employee recognition program that awards deserving employees who go above and beyond for patients, visitors or their co-workers. Nominees to the President’s Award include one Promise 360 Champion and two Spotlight winners who represent each Piedmont hospital and entity. The 2018-2019 winner is Lorinda (Lori) Wood, staff RN, PACU from Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

The single mom, Lori Wood, also believes that Pinkard would be able to fulfill his dreams too. She wants him to be more independent and so, she is teaching him cooking. He wants a girlfriend too. Well, mom says that he can do whatever he wants and stay with them as long as he wants. If he chooses to go out for a job or study, she will support that decision too. The choice will be his.

As of now, the entire family is in love with Pinkard and the story of generosity and love.
