When we honestly analyze which person matters the most in our lives, we realize that it is those who have chosen to share our pain. They try to heal our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who comes in silently, stays silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion matters the most. Instead of giving advice, cures or solutions, they stay by us in times of grief, loneliness, and bereavement. The video of a child with Down Syndrome comforting his autistic classmate proves that they understand a friend’s sufferings more than many others.

Children have an inherent purity that allows them to empathize with those in pain. They are yet to develop the cold-hearted insensitivity of adults. They live beyond notions of right and wrong.

All that the child with Down Syndrome knows is that his friend is sad and has tears in his eyes. The spontaneous gesture was captured by a teacher in a school in Mexico. The child soothes his autistic friend, who is apparently upset. He wipes off his tears, hugs him, and gently pats him. He playfully tries to cheer him up. It must have worked wonders for the distraught child.

That is what people do who truly love you. They put their arms around you and love you without caring to know the reason. The child with Down Syndrome realizes that his autistic friend is in distress and that is all he needs to know. He silently comes by and comforts his friend. He has an understanding heart and realizes that his friend is in distress. This child doesn’t need to know the reason.

The video was posted on Facebook and has been viewed more than 20 million times and a further 6.5 million views on Twitter.

Qualities like intellect are empty and insufficient without love, compassion, and empathy. Children with Down Syndrome can feel pain in a way that ordinary mortals cannot. There is a certain beauty in their perception of the world. The child in the video realizes that his autistic friend is in distress and reacts in the way he knows best, with love and compassion.
