Inspiration can come from anywhere. While some of us favor movie lines, some favor books. And there is another part of the population which gets inspired from the speeches by other powerful people. And that’s better, you know why? For when they hear a person saying something that means a great deal to themselves, it reverberates in the soul and mind of the listener and actually puts a great zeal in them to make something out of their life.

Now, Fortune asked several of their Most Empowered Women on what their favorite quote was. And interestingly, none of the quotes are mainstream. This signifies that not only are these women focused and determined, they are also great readers and listeners- two qualities needed to excel in life.

Women have never had it easy. Throughout the centuries, long drawn out patriarchal struggles have led to several uprisings by women. And while a long way is still left the progress made is astounding.

Linnea Roberts

A feminist in the truest sense of the term, Linnea Conrad Roberts decided to launch GingerBread Capital because she realized and understood the importance and profitability of women-led businesses. The company started in 2016 and it is only fitting that the first investment would be in a feature film about gender equality called Equity.

When asked about her favorite quote, she mentions this:

“If you can’t find enough women founders, you’re not looking hard enough.”

Considering her approach towards investment banking and her dedication towards uplifting women businesses, we can totally understand where her quote comes from.

Anna Sedgley

Anna Sedgley was the Chief Financial Officer at Dow Jones & Company Inc till December 2018. A Chartered Accountant, she has an impressive resume that comprises of working at Pricewaterhouse Cooper and British Sky Broadcasting.

Her favorite quote is:

“Forget the mistake, remember the lesson.”

Admirable, considering that everyone is simply focused on the mistake that one makes. No one really cares about what they learn from the situation itself.

Arlan Hamilton

A true Samaritan, Arlan Hamilton’s Backstage Capital launched in 2015 has its employment base strictly in women of color and the LGBTQ community. She decided to invest $36 million specifically for women founders of color.

Her favorite quote is by Pablo Neruda:

“I have lived so long that someday they have to forget me forcibly. My heart was inexhaustible.”

Julia Grace

The Senior Director of Infrastructure Engineering at Slack, Julia Grace has worked for two years and taken the company to unperceived heights. She loves problems that require the use of her engineering brain while also developing businesses and organizing teams.

Her favorite quote when asked was this:

“Someone busier than you is making time for exercise.”

Apt! For in the busy schedule of life, excuses would only put you a step behind.

Tekedra Mawakana

The Chief External Officer at Waymo, Tekedra Mawakana is the head of every public relations operation undertaken under the project. She handles governmental relations while also expanding the company overseas. Joining Waymo in 2017, this relations veteran brought with her 20 years worth of experience.

Kat Cole

Kat Cole has extensive work experience under her belt. From being the Executive Vice President at Hooters to becoming the former President at Cinnabon, she is currently the Chief Operating Officer and President of the North American division of Focus Brands.

Her favorite quote is:

“Don’t forget where you came from, but don’t you dare let it solely define you.”

The context behind it is beautiful. The quote is a version of what her mom writes on her birthday card. And it simply talks about holding onto one’s roots, but not letting it become your only identity.

Lauren Berson

Another woman with an impressive resume, Lauren Berson is the VP and Head of Strategic Growth Office at WW. She previously worked for JCCA and Delta Airlines.

These women have redefined the gender roles assigned to them by society. They give us hope towards achieving an equal society in its true terms where not only men but women can be excellent leaders too, in every field.
